The issue
- The client set sustainability targets for 2030 and 2040, which included reducing the emissions to 20% of their 1990 levels, halving their water use per passenger and improving waste management.
- They were aware of their current footprint, but lack clarity on how to meet or beat their targets.
- They were unsure how they compared to their peers, in both current sustainability performance and future ambition.
- Further, their operations were complex with many interdependencies across different business units and activities, from asset replacement to airfield operations.
Solution
- Curzon Consulting benchmarked the client’s sustainability performance and ambitions with UK and European airports, using the outcome to identify best practices and trends.
- Developed and prioritised a long list of potential initiatives to be implemented, with associated interdependencies.
- Performed a detailed assessment of top-priority initiatives to provide the business case, carbon impact and financial impacts – (incl. future energy and carbon prices).
- Created a Sustainability Roadmap and overarching strategy to meet the client’s targets – giving transparency to the route to 2030 and 2040 targets.
The results
- In just 7 weeks, Curzon Consulting delivered a roadmap to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 85% by 2030, beating client 2030 targets and moving them nearer to Net Zero.
- For each of the initiatives in the roadmap, high-level business cases gave details of sustainability impact and financial impact. Many initiatives had internal rates of return in excess of 30%.
- Curzon identified interdependencies, resource requirements and key steps to implementation.
- The roadmap and strategy empowers the client to reach Net Zero, utilising innovative energy sources, game-changing geothermal heating technology, intelligently upgraded utility systems and vehicle fleet management.
